Research interests

My main focus is molecular ecology - the application of molecular DNA-based methods to study aspects of the ecology of plants and animals. We analyse patterns of genetic and genomic variation at levels of individuals, clones, populations, regions, species up to communities. These genetic patterns can reveal historical to recent processes connected to gene flow, genetic drift and selection on various spatial and time scales like postglacial colonisation, habitat fragmentation, inbreeding and environmental gradients. Central fields here are
1) the conservation genetics of endangered rare plant species
2) landscape genetics as a tool to understand the dependence of populations on landscape structure;
3) invasion genetics of neophytic species, both of European and other origin.
4) community genetics: the relationship between species diversity and genetic diversity.

A second focus is, using a macroecological approach, the ecological relevance of various plant traits in determining dynamic ecological processes. As a basis various species traits are assembled in the BIOLFLOR database. Here, I am particularly interested in plant traits that affect or are affected by processes of gene flow like mating systems, flowering biology, phylogeny, chromosome numbers and DNA content.

MSAP_calc

MSAP_calc.R is collection of functions that allow to score methyslation-sensitive-amplification-polymorphism markers (MSAP). It was published with Schulz, B., R. L. Eckstein and W. Durka (2013). Scoring and analysis of methylation-sensitive amplification polymorphisms for epigenetic population studies. Molecular Ecology Resources 13: 642-653.

Here I provide an updated version MSAP_calc_1_3.R that corrects for a bug that occurred if identical sample IDs were used in different populations. MSAP_calc_1_3.zip
