Research interests
I have a broad interest in various aspects of microbial ecology. I am interested in the activity of bacteria in their natural environment, especially soils and sediments. How do microorganisms affect their environment and how is their activity regulated? To get an insight how things work in nature the strategy is to study the ecology of microorganisms under conditions as close as possible to the natural situation, ideally directly in their natural habitat.
Actualy I am working in two major research fields:
1. Emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) from surface waters. I want to quantify the magnitude of gas fluxes and aim to understand regulating factors. Particularly I am interested in GHG emissions from dry aquatic systems.
2. Role of the sediment for water quality in reservoirs. I am using
microsensors
to study the biogeochemsitry of the sediment water interface.
Actual research is about the role of the sediments for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in reservoirs.
