Principal Research Interests

My main research interest is a better understanding of soils as complex systems. Thereby, the porous structure of soils is a key aspect, which makes the multitude of processes in soils possible in the first place. These include water, gas and matter fluxes, as well as all biological processes of matter turnover. This is because the porous structure of the soil constitutes the habitat of the soil organisms and determines the possible transport pathways. One challenge is to represent these processes and their interactions in suitable mathematical models in such a way that we can predict the effect of changing conditions in soil use and climate on the important soil functions. These soil functions include the productivity for plant growth, the storage of water and carbon, the control of nutrient cycles and the decomposition of pollutants.
