CSI:ENVIRONMENT: Isotope forensics meets biogeochemistry - linking sources and sinks of organic contaminants by compound specific isotope investigation
I'm involved in the "CSI:ENVIRONMENT project" and my PhD project aims at the development of HPLC-IR-MS to measure the carbon isotope composition of polar compounds. Currently, GC based isotope analysis methods are relatively well developed for simple chemicals but liquid based chromatography methods are not yet common. I will determine the typical forensic isotope fingerprints (Br and Cl) of selected compounds (chloro- and bromophenols, herbicide (phenoxyacids e.g. 2,4-D) of various chemical manufacturers using elemental analyser to provide ‘calibrated’ reference compounds for use in method development of HPLC-IRM-MS for carbon isotopes. I will investigate possible isotope effects during extraction and sample preparation procedures of these chemicals.
I will validate the developed LC methods using reference biotic and abiotic degradation experiments, for example the microbial reductive dechlorination of chlorinated phenols by selected microbial strains. Observed isotope effects will be compared with the ones computed theoretically.
