Risk assessment of fine particulate matter under changing climatic conditions
DAAD-DST India
DAAD-COLCIENCIAS Columbia

Air quality and associated effects in urban area is a major issue in both developed and developing countries. Recent studies showed correlation between respiratory problems, mortality rate and premature death with air pollution levels, especially fine paticulate matter (PM).
Actual projects are focused on risk assessment of air contaminants in megacities in Asia and Latin America. We intended to characterize the size, morphology, composition and toxicity of PM in contrasting environments of urban area. Additionally the exposure to volatile compounds (VOC, NO, O3, SO2) will be determined.

Air particulate matter will be collected on different exposed places the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives will be analyzed. Using a new developed method 65 PAHs can be analysed simultaneously which is important for a better risk assessment. The biological impact on human cells lines will be investigated. Different bioassays will be used to acquire more information about the underlying mechanism of particle associated health effects.

Using specific statistical models the spatiotemporal distribution and expansion of air contaminants as well as their health risk will be estimated under changing climatic conditions.

Research Interest

  • Health Risk assessment of environmental indoor and outdoor contaminants
  • Development of methods for analyses of PAHs in particulate matter
  • Impact of environmental pollutant compounds on cell systems
  • Analysis of chemical compounds bound on air particles
  • Statistical analysis of association between exposure and health outcome
