Macroecology group

European range of Boloria titania and its host plant Bistorta officinalis

Welcome to the Macroecology Group! Macroecology analyses and characterizes  the emergent properties exhibited by systems composed of large numbers of "particles" (Brown 1999). Frequently, these large numbers of "ecological properties" are assumed to be spatial units, i.e. macroecology is considered to partly overlap with biogeography. In our group, we take a slightly wider approach and also consider large amounts of species and functional traits as particles to be analysed. Specifically by taking a trait based approach, we link macroecology with functional ecology.

Furthermore, we revise and develop statistical tools needed for macroecological analyses, especially for spatial analyses or to combine spatial and phylogenetic analyses.

We focus in our research on several aspects of functional Macroecology. Specifically, we are interested in the following topics:

  • Biological Invasions
  • Urban Ecology
  • Impacts of Climate Change on biodiversity
  • Impacts of Land Use Change on biodiversity
  • Biogeography of Functional Traits
  • Biotic Interactions
  • Spatial Statistics

In my research, I focus on the effects of land use on plant biodiversity, especially on urbanization and its effects on functional and phylogenetic diversity. Besides, I want to understand how biodiversity is related to ecosystem services.

In my PhD project I focus on the consequences of climate change on ecosystem processes in different grassland types. At the Global Change Experimental Facility (GCEF) I study plant productivity and diversity under realistic land-management conditions, both with ambient climate and changed climate conditions according to future scenarios. To assess the effects of an extreme drought on grasslands we set up an experimental site as part of the International Drought Experiment (Drought-Net) by using fixed shelters. On this site I also collect data about productivity and plant community composition. By the use of common research protocols the results will be comparable to over 60 sites worldwide.

My PhD research focuses on the processes that lead to naturalization of an Mexican invasive plant (Ageratina adenophora) along an elevational gradient in western Himalaya. Specifically, I am working on the local adaptation and phenotypic plasticity of the invasive plant using reciprocal transplant experiments along the elevational gradient. Additionally I am also investigating the climatic niche shift of the species between different invaded ranges and its native range.

My research is supported by DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service).

My PhD project focuses on the spatiotemporal response of pollinators to global changes. Analyzing data from an ongoing monitoring scheme in Germany, I investigate the combined effects of weather and landscape structure on wild bee communities. My results highlight the importance of semi-natural areas and green infrastructure elements in agricultural landscapes for mitigating the effects of warming and high weather variability on wild bees.

My PhD is supported by the BIodivERsA project EC21C: European Conservation for the 21st Century.
