Welcome to the Macroecology & Vegetation Science Group! We conduct hypothesis- and data-driven research on large-scale biodiversity patterns in the context of Global Change, focusing on biological invasions, functional traits, urban ecosystems, and long-term biodiversity dynamics.

The working group employs cutting-edge methodologies and advanced analytical tools to investigate the intricate dynamics governing vegetation composition, species distribution patterns, and other aspects of biodiversity across various spatial and temporal scales. We aim to unravel the underlying mechanisms that shape ecological communities, biodiversity gradients, and ecosystem functioning.

Through a combination of field studies, computational modelling, remote sensing techniques, and data synthesis, our team investigates how natural and anthropogenic environmental factors, such as climate and land use, influence the diversity, composition, and distribution of plant communities and regional and broader-scale floras.

Collaboration and knowledge exchange are key pillars of the working group's philosophy. We actively engage in partnerships with national and international research institutions, fostering a network of collaboration to address complex ecological challenges.

Our group welcomes new students, scientists, and visitors, so please get in touch if you are interested in joining us.

In my research, I focus on the effects of land use on plant biodiversity, especially on urbanization and its effects on functional and phylogenetic diversity. Besides, I want to understand how biodiversity is related to ecosystem services.

I am interested in biological invasions, the functional composition of communities and assemblages, i.e. the composition of their functional traits, as well as impacts of climate change and land-use change on such assemblages. Recently, I started to monitor primary succession in recently deglaciated glacier forefields of the Alps.

I am interested in how invasive plant species affects ES and EDS and which sectors are benefiting and which one are those that are impacted. Identifying competing interests and identifying plants or features which are most prominent in them, will help mitigating impacts on ES.

My research is focused on the diversity and dynamics of plant communities. The dynamics of plant communities are often very slow, hence for experimental research I concentrate on successional communities (fallow land, abandoned fields), which show substantial change in species composition and diversity across few years.
