Key research areas

  • Effect-Directed Analysis: Toxicant identification in complex mixtures including water, sediments, tissue, blood and urine. This includes the development of new separation techniques, the application and evaluation of bioassays and a broad array of chemical analytical techniques.
  • Bioavailability of toxicants and its operationalization as a prioritisation criteria in effect-directed analysis, e.g. of contaminated sediments including extraction techniques, passive dosing and prediction models for chemicals uptake
  • Structure elucidation of unknown environmental compounds combining chemical analysis with the prediction chromatographic retention, mass spectrometric fragmentation, toxicity e.c.t.
  • Assessment and prioritisation of contamination in aquatic ecosystems and the establishment of cause-effect relationships between chemicals and observable effects, particularly in the context of water quality management and the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive.

Boards and memberships

  • Member of the Steering Committee of the “Network of reference laboratories and related organizations for monitoring and bio-monitoring of emerging environmental pollutants” (NORMAN). Active role in WG on Substance Prioritization. Coordinator of WG on Effect-Directed Analysis
  • Member of the Advisory Board of the Centre for Future Chemical Risk Assessment and Management Strategies (FRAM) at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden
  • Member of the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) . Member of Scientific Board of SETAC Europe Conference 2023 in Dublin
