Renewable Energy

Production of regenerative energy, transport or storage of renewable energy: no other topic is currently so newsworthy and heavily discussed as the topic "renewable energies". The Department of Environmental Engineering is active in specific areas dealing with the technical implementation of the sustainable energy transition.

By means of  hydrothermal carbonization (HTC)  waste biomass materials can be converted into bio-coal (also called biochar). These biochars can either be employed for energy generation or in terms of carbon sequestration as soil amendment.

Biogas upgrading  is one of the key issues for biogas storage in the natural gas grid. Current research efforts concentrate on efficient drying processes of biogas using radio waves.
