The PhD project aims to contribute to the development of analytical techniques for characterization of nanomaterials in complex matrices such as biological test media using the outstanding infrastructure offered by the UFZ in Leipzig. The project is embedded in an EU project with 28 partners and the successful candidate will work within an international project and interdisciplinary environment.

An increasing number of nanomaterials are entering the market in every day products ranging from health care and leisure to electronics, cosmetics, energy, agriculture, food and transportion. New properties and forms of these materials make it challenging to provide a suitable legislative framework to ensure safe development of nano-enabled products. The reliable and reproducible characterization of NMs is certainly the most relevant objective. The PhD project aims to develop analytical techniques to characterize nanomaterials in complex matrices such as biological test media. Methods for the analysis of particle distribution in different matrices and for the particle surface characterization will be developed making use of the outstanding infrastructure offered by the UFZ. The project is embedded in a EU project with 25 partners. The candidate will be in close contact with international project partners working in related disciplines.

Organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) are a diverse family of pesticides and particularly aracicides used since the 1940s. In contrast to organochlorine pesticides, OPs have a shorter persistent time which favors their worldwide application. However, OPs and their derivate are highly toxic. They inhibit the Acetylcholinesterase (AChE), an enzyme which is essential for neurotransmission in insects, animals and humans. The inhibition process is irreversible and it results in impairments in attention, memory, and other domains of cognition. The high toxicity and persistence of OPs in the environment is of great concern, as they have repeatedly been detected in soils, sediments waterbodies as well as food and drinking water. Thus tools are needed to understand their sources, reactive transport pathways and sinks in the environment. Stable isotope analysis has been proved as a valuable method for the detection of origin of chemicals, as the isotopic profile reflects the isotopic composition of raw materials, synthetic pathways and purification processes.

Sustainable and ecological processes for the production of food, chemicals, and fuels are of outstanding interest in times of increasing population, limitation of fossil resources and climate change. Biological engineering can contribute to address those issues. Plants and microorganisms can be designed to produce a variety of interesting compounds for the synthesis of fine chemicals and biofuels from biological and renewable resources.
