Biogeochemical fluxes and transformations at pelagic redoxclines in lakes (RedoxFlux)

Beispielbild für Bild-Text-Template

The pelagic redoxcline - interface between oxic and anoxic water bodies – separates or rather connects these two very contrasting habitats and is a hot spot of biogeochemical transformations in many lakes. This includes e. g. the sulfur, iron and manganese cycle. In the project we determine, in cooperation with the AG Environmental physics, University of Koblenz-Landau, the vertical fluxes and biogeochemical turnover rates at pelagic redoxclines in three lakes differing with regard to the availability of reduced chemical species and light as well as the intensity of vertical mixing.

The reaction kinetics of the involved chemical and microbial transformations are also investigated in especially designed laboratory mesocosms.
