Fifth Roundtable

The fifth Round Table meeting took place on September 22, 2011 at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Campus Lo Contador, Providencia. For the first time, two academics of the Universidad de Santiago de Chile (USACH) from the Technology Faculty participated. In addition, the head of the Forestry Companies Area of the Fundación Chile was present.

It was the first out of three topic-specific Round Tables, during which participants collectively propose possible adaptation measures. This is based on the results of the expert studies performed by the CAS scientists as well as stakeholder knowledge and experiences. The focus of this fifth Round Table was on land use, land use changes and vulnerabilities.

Two scientific inputs were given on a) land use patterns and changes in the Metropolitan Region of Santiago de Chile as related to the environmental hazards of flood and heat, and b) vulnerability of the population exposed to the effects of flood and heat. The participatory activity included brainstorming and discussion on two general questions which were posed to the stakeholders: i) how could threat prevention be integrated into the urban planning process?, and ii) what would be some possible measures to diminish the exposure of the population to flooding and extreme heat, respectively?

All information will serve as an important basis for the selection and prioritization of concrete adaptation measures. The next Round Table meeting will take place on November 21, 2011.
