Connecting processes and structures driving the landscape C dynamics over scales
Carbon sequestration in and greenhouse gas release from terrestrial and freshwater aquatic ecosystems are important factors for the global C balance and strongly affect the trajectories of the climate in the future. It is becoming increasingly clear that freshwaters are not passive conduits to the oceans but rather environments with extensive exchange of carbon, production, and consumption. Especially the moraine landscape which contains a large amount of small shallow inland waters with its close and intimate link between terrestrial and aquatic systems is thus an ideal model that allows studying the links between aquatic and terrestrial systems and their importance for the integrated landscape carbon dynamics.
In this talk I will present the idea and discuss first results and methods used of the LandScales project. The main focus of LandScales is to understand the C dynamics of complex moraine landscape where the small inland waters are expected to play a pivotal role as hotspots for biogeochemical transformations.
