Module 3: Impacts of resource use for bioenergy on the Environment: spatial aspects

We develop a set of methods aiming to integrate the effects of resource use for bioenergy activities on the environment at landscape level. The results of this systems analysis will be used for expand the concept of life cycle assessments (LCAs), as it considers the spatial structure of landscapes and land use pattern.

Approach

A landscape generator will be developed for enabling us to vary systematically spatial structures of model-landscapes (e.g. landscape configuration and composition). A set of model-landscapes will be generated for systematic analysis of the impact of resource use for bioenergy on several environmental variables.

We aim to identify landscape metrics as indicators correlating with spatial ecological impacts of bioenergy activities on specific environmental system components. These analyses will be integrated into spatially explicit life cycle assessments (LCAs) along the whole value chain of resources used for biofuel purposes, which is aimed to be developed in another module of this project.
