Shrink Smart - The Governance of Shrinkage

Ostrava / Czech Republik

Ostrava has been the main industrial centre of the Czech Republic with a strong economic basis in coal mining and coke, iron and steel industry, heavy machinery and chemistry. After the collapse of the communist regime in 1989 the region faced a dramatic economic transformation and lost more than 20,000 inhabitants. The main policy responses towards shrinkage have been directed on attracting investments and regaining economic prosperity.
