Biothermodynamics

The quantitative and qualitative course of material and energy flows in organisms, within the whole bioproduction plant as well as in ecosystems is an essential criterion for the commercialization of biotechnological products or for an estimation the success of the decontamination of ecosystems.

Our group explores fundamentals for application of thermodynamics in biochemical networks and investigates/develops in particular:

  • the thermodynamic contributions on the way to "glassy cells",
  • the thermodynamic peculiarities in the macromolecular crowding of a real cell,
  • the thermodynamic background of biodegradation of contaminants with low water solubility, and
  • the applicability of irreversible thermodynamics to estimate decontamination rates and microbial yield coefficients.
