Summer School Chemicals in Soil:
Interactions, Availability and Residue Formation

Leipzig, September 22nd-25th, 2008

HIGRADE

Summary

From 22 to 25 September 2008, a summer school will be organised at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research UFZ in Leipzig, Germany. The focus will be on the study of bioavailability of chemicals in soils, in particular on the interactions of biota with the chemicals and with the solid soil matrix. These interactions are complex processes, which need to be addressed from different points of view. During the summer school, international experts will give lectures in topics in this field of research, and the school will provide a platform for discussion. The school aims at bringing together young and established scientists for an interaction in an interdisciplinary course related to assessing and studying interactions of biota with pollutants and with the soil matrix and their effect on pollutant degradation. These processes are important factors of bioavailability and risk assessment of pollutants in ecosystems. Biological, chemical and physical aspects of the interactions and transformations of organic and inorganic compounds in soil will be covered.
