Research interests
My field of research is the microbial degradation and biotransformation of environmental contaminants (emerging micro-pollutants in aquatic ecosystems, organic contaminants arising from industrial activities) with respect to their environmental fate, natural degradation processes, and applications in environmental biotechnology. Fields of special interest are the degradation/biotransformation of xenobiotic compounds by different kinds of fungi and their oxidative enzymes, with emphasis on the involvement of extracellular, radical-based degradation mechanisms initiated by extracellular enzymes (mainly fungal laccases), and the contribution of the fungal sub-community to biodegradation/ biotransformation processes in different environmental compartments.
Current research
- Microorganism and enzyme Immobilization: NOvel Techniques and Approaches for Upgraded Remediation of Underground-, wastewater and Soil (MINOTAURUS)
- Discovery and mining of biological resources (Helmholtz project)
- Ecological water treatment processes - constructed wetlands and other bioprocesses (Helmholtz project)
- Methane from bio-chemical processes (Helmholtz project)
Completed projects
- Novel sustainable bioprocesses for the european colour industries (SOPHIED)
- Adaptive physiological - biochemical reactions to ecologically important substances
Other professional activities
- Advisory Board Member of 'Journal of Basic Microbiology'
