Research
I'm involved in the "CSI:ENVIRONMENT project" and my PhD program is "Application and implementation of CSIA" for assessing pollutant sources and sinks in the environment. I will combine novel extraction and clean-up techniques with innovative isotope analysis to determine isotope ratios of contaminants from field sites. In a first approach, I will use the isotope data for developing a concept of source identification of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers, that is a persistent organic pollutant (POP), which have been used both as an agricultural insecticide and as a pharmaceutical. In addition, other known organochlorine pesticides as DDTs might be involved in concept of source identification. In a second approach, a concept of source identification and age ascertainment of chlorinated ethenes will be developed. Chlorinated ethenes are widely used organic solvents and they are the most abundant groundwater pollutants.
