Research interests

The degradation of contaminants in subsurface environments is a complex process consisting of a multitude of interlinked biotic and abiotic processes. Reactive transport models have proven essential in their quantitative and qualitative analysis. Focusing on the biotic aspects, I am interested in the influence of bacterial interactions and interdependencies on the biodegradation potential. In order to address this question, we couple the Biogeochemical Reaction Network Simulator (BRNS), a highly flexible 1D reactive transport model, to a state-of-the-art 3D transport model. The resulting simulation tool will allow us to consider

  • arbitrary biochemical reaction networks and kinetics, and
  • microbial driven stable isotope fractionation

in our models, helping to determine key factors that enhance and limit the biodegradation potential in the subsurface domain.
