Diss. about ecophysiology, especially the feeding rate of Daphnia.
Experience with drinking water problems and large-scale water-supply systems.
Habilitation on ecophysiology, population statistics, diurnal vertical migration of zooplankton.
Research projects on 'Cycling of Matter in the Ecosystem of Lake Constance' focussing on 'zooplankton in the pelagic zone' and on ecosystem characteristics.
Investigations of pre-andine lakes in Patagonia and of volcanic acidic waters of Copahue-Caviahue, in Latin-American-German projects.
Research fields since 1992 are environmental problems and limnology of the river Elbe, of natural lakes, and of the opencast lignite-mining lakes in the area of the former G.D.R., including geogenically acidic lakes.

Research Projects

  • Contaminations at Rivers Elbe and Mulde after flooding of August 2002. Project funded by BMBF Oct. 2002 - Apr. 2004 (14 partners): The aims of the project were to measure and to assess the risks and threats by contaminants that were distributed by and left back after the extreme flooding in the Elbe River catchment in 2002. The contaminants include the inorganic substances from old and new mining activities, toxic substances from the chemical industry, and pathogens from flooded pasture areas, hospitals and wastewater treatment plants.
  • Microbial in-situ neutralisation of sulphur-acidic mining lakes. Project funded by German Environmental Foundation (DBU), May 2002 - Apr. 2005 (5 partners): The major goal of the project is to develop a practically applicable method for the remediation of extremely acidic mining lakes. Basing on laboratory- and fieldexperiments we will try to neutralise a whole lake. The detailed knowledge of all important processes, especially concerning the quality and use of organic matter is necessary to adapt the technology to particular problems and to optimise the performance.
  • Limnology and biogeochemistry of volcanic acidic waters in the water-shed of the andean Volcano Copahue (Argentina, Chile), Feb. 2003 - Feb. 2005 (coordinator of 3 partners), Volkswagenstiftung
