Soils represent complex systems of relative high stability being capable for environmental features (filter, purge, transformation, decontamination and attenuation). Due to the very slowly running biogeochemical processes soil buffers negative impacts up to a certain extent. Only when reaching or exceeding trigger values the system becomes unstable and it takes likewise long time periods for remediation. Soil organic matter (SOM) represents a key controlling factor for almost all soil functions.
