Research on Governance and Science-Policy-Interface

Central challenges in environmental policy, like conservation of biological diversity, are highly affected by land use. Numerous stakeholders from the state, private enterprises and civil society and their interaction on different levels of decision making (local, national, international) decide in turn on the kinds of land use. The relatively new field of governance research analyses the coordination of stakeholders and levels and investigates how institutions should operate as "control mechanisms" in order to guarantee conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Besides research activities, the UFZ attempts to play an active part in the integration of research into societal processes. On the one hand the UFZ directly advises policy (e.g. Survey on the relevance of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment for Germany), on the other hand UFZ-scientists support the development of a national platform for biodiversity research.
