Contents "Optimizing Writing Strategies for
Getting Research Published in English"

Excellent scientists need excellent data, but they also need to be able to effectively communicate the
results and significance of their research to their peers in the community. Writing good papers is hard
work, even for many experienced researchers. Being aware of the criteria that papers must meet and
using the writing process efficiently can make the task easier.
During the feedback sessions, participants will examine a draft of a text they have
written, as well as text drafts submitted by the other participants. During the three-day workshop,
professional input from the trainer will alternate with practical written exercises and discussions of
relevant issues. There is an additional writing component with feedback that will take place after the
initial two-day workshop and will be performed online.
Didactic aim /
competences
In this workshop, participants will learn about the structural and language norms for research papers
published in English. Participants will also be introduced to a variety of strategies that will provide
assistance to draft texts more efficiently, to pinpoint their strengths and weaknesses, and to revise
them effectively.
Didactic elements Day 1
• managing the writing process professionally
• understanding the drafting and revision processes
• finding a focus by identifying an appropriate research question
• creating precise, accurate, and correct sentences
• understanding structural and language norms for English research papers
• giving and receiving feedback on texts
Day 2
• examining structural relationships within and between sections of a paper
• examining participants’ texts with regard to structure and language, using a variety of
feedback strategies
• recognizing stylistically adequate and inadequate language
Day 3
• follow-up written assignment and feedback
Because the workshop uses material from participants, there is a call for papers two weeks prior to the
workshop. Guidelines, a deadline and where to send the paper will be sent to participants once their
enrolment in the workshop is confirmed.

Contents "Good projects need money in order to be put into practice. In light of limited public funding, the
securing of sources of financial support – whether classic science-funding organisations, foundations
or companies – is an important task, especially in the academic and non-profit sectors. But
for many early-career scientists writing grant applications is a difficult task.
Even though there is no guaranteed path to reach the target, the methods and instruments of
writing proposals can be learnt. A prerequisite is an attractive project concept. If a convincingly
formulated application is then submitted, the chances of securing funding are good.
The following
topics are covered:
>> Basics of proposal writing:
Strategic considerations
>> From first to last:
The structure of a successful proposal
>> At times every word matters:
Strategic formulations
>> Change of perspective:
My project from the funders’ point of view
>> Financial planning:
What is expected of me?
>> Grant applications in practice:
Tips & stumbling blocks
>> Proposal writing:
My next steps"
Didactic aim /
competences
"The workshop communicates proven grant application knowledge. It shows how strategic initial
considerations naturally lead to the structuring and formation of the proposal. The participants
engage with the content related, formal and organisational aspects of writing."

Contents To most doctoral candidates, composing their dissertation poses a great challenge. Apart from the demanding intellectual and academic development of the process, various aspects of life and work might need to be organized accordingly. To keep track and follow a clear strategy is often perceived as difficult. However, there are tools and methods to help structuring your workload and gradually complete your dissertation project successfully – rather than quitting halfway or struggling every step of the way.
Our workshop will regard your thesis as a project. Consequently, various project management techniques are employed in crafting your individual project plan: from defining goals and mile stones in your dissertation, to organizing your way of work and getting familiar with instruments of time management. The overall goal of our workshop is drafting your own Work Breakdown Structure (WBS).
In order to work on/discuss tangible and authentic examples during the workshop, please bring your current time- and work plan or the exposé of your dissertation.
The workshop is suitable for doctoral candidates in the initial phase as well as in advanced stages of their dissertation. New motivation and ideas for the organization of work can also be valuable while finalizing a dissertation project.
