Target group PhD students in all physical sciences. A working knowledge of English is required.
Contents This course treats various aspects of scientific writing in English. Some elements of grammar peculair to scientific writing will be reviewed: the choice of tense in various portions of a text, the use of active and passive voice, the placement of key words in sentences and paragraphs, etc. The flow of thought in English is more strictly confined than it is in German, and the limitations this imposes on the structure of individual paragraphs is explained. Then, the organization and structure of a scientific paper is discussed in detail using a typical set-up of a paper (Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, Summary and Conclusions) as a starting point. Each aspect of a research study needs to be positioned in the proper section of a paper, and requires a specific treatment: summary overview, detailed description, insightful discussion, reasoned speculation. The sections of the paper need to fully complement one another to give the paper the required cohesion. A few ways to achieve this are discussed in some detail. Finally , the review process will be explained, and the role of the author in it elucidated.
