Contents This workshop will provide an alternative to the usual CV / Covering letter method of job hunting. You probably spend at least a half of your waking time at work. It is really important that you get the right job. A job that uses your skills, working with people you connect with.
Many people job hunt with a CV and covering letters. While this method works after a time, it is not the most effective way for highly intelligent and highly qualified people to find positions.
The workshop will teach you alternative methods to the usual and well-known ways of job hunting. Methods that will allow you to:
- Access the hidden job market of unadvertised positions
- Reliably find an institute or company and position within it that is right for you
- Actively manage the progress of your search (rather than send your CV and hope for a positive response)
- Give yourself the edge over others who use the more traditional methods of CV and covering letter
- Become the “preferred candidate” or even have positions created specifically for you.
- Gather the information needed to aid salary negotiations
- Job hunt in a way that is interesting and not demoralising
Please note: This workshop will not be about how to create a great CV and/or fill in online applications.
Didactic aim /
competences
Get to know alternative methods to job hunting.
Didactic elements The workshop will include practise interviews and a section on improving self-confidence to help you remain motivated.
The workshop draws on the personal experience of all participants as well as that of the trainer; the agenda of the workshop is flexible and set by the attendees thereby ensuring that the training is specific for and relevant to the participants’ individual needs. The workshop will be a structured discussion forum to facilitate ideas and develop strategies.
The workshop will be very interactive.
All attendees will be polled before the workshop to determine their specific areas of interest. This ensures that the workshop covers the areas that are most beneficial to each person.
As mentioned before, the workshop will be VERY interactive. As we will be experimenting with new ways of understanding and thinking, active participation will be essential.
There will be practise of interview techniques and styles. Video recording / playback equipment may be available to provide feedback and review for those that wish to participate. There can also be group and pair practice for networking and interview skills. Expect to be asked lots of questions, expect to be challenged, expect to participate!

Contents To most doctoral candidates, composing their dissertation poses a great challenge. Apart from the demanding intellectual and academic development of the process, various aspects of life and work might need to be organized accordingly. To keep track and follow a clear strategy is often perceived as difficult. However, there are tools and methods to help structuring your workload and gradually complete your dissertation project successfully – rather than quitting halfway or struggling every step of the way.
Our workshop will regard your thesis as a project. Consequently, various project management techniques are employed in crafting your individual project plan: from defining goals and mile stones in your dissertation, to organizing your way of work and getting familiar with instruments of time management. The overall goal of our workshop is drafting your own Work Breakdown Structure (WBS).
In order to work on/discuss tangible and authentic examples during the workshop, please bring your current time- and work plan or the exposé of your dissertation.
The workshop is suitable for doctoral candidates in the initial phase as well as in advanced stages of their dissertation. New motivation and ideas for the organization of work can also be valuable while finalizing a dissertation project.
