Welcome to the Helmholtz Research School ESCALATE!

The research school ESCALATE is funded by the Helmholtz association, the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research – UFZ, the University of Leipzig, the Martin-Luther-University of Halle-Wittenberg and the Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt, UBA). An interdisciplinary group of scientists from these institutions have joined forces to provide training and conduct research in the field of Ecosystem Services.

Our main goal is educate a new generation of young scientists in interdisciplinary ecosystem service research by bringing together an experienced and multidisciplinary team for doctoral education, integrating the UFZ with excellent external partners. ESCALATE provides harmonized education in theoretical principles of all involved disciplines, enabling interdisciplinary thinking and research on ecosystem services.


HIGRADE, the Helmholtz Interdisciplinary GRADuate School for Environmental Research forms an umbrella structure for all doctoral activities at the UFZ and provides systematic education of young researchers in emerging research fields concerning environmental problems.

ESCALATE – Synthesis Projects
Call for proposals now open!

We invite PhDs to suggest topics for a synthesis project on environmental topics. The objective is to jointly conduct a scientific synthesis project from start to finish and to submit a manuscript to an international peer-reviewed journal. The total budget is 6000€. 

Deadline for submission of proposals has been extended and is now July 10, 2015.
