THREE WORKSHOPS OF THE REGIONAL LEARNING NETWORK

On January 24 and 25, 2011 the first workshop of the Regional Learning Network took place at the CEPAL headquarters in Santiago de Chile and marked the official starting point of the Network. Scientific experts from all six cities shared their knowledge on expected future climate changes as well as on the related impacts in their cities. The workshop comprised input presentations from all experts and was accompanied by intensive discussion. Similarities as well as differences between the cities regarding expected climate changes, modeling methodologies, impacts and vulnerabilities have been worked out and are among the main results of this workshop.

The second workshop of the Regional Learning Network was held on September 26 and 27, 2011 at the CEPAL headquarters. The six cities involved in the Network were represented by decision makers from the respective metropolitan and national levels. They came together to exchange their experiences and to reflect on activities related to climate change adaptation. Input presentations covered existing adaptation plans and programs for each city as well as the employed measures and instruments. The second part of the workshop was dominated by discussions and participatory activities in order to evaluate jointly the given plans and measures. As the main result, a qualified overview was achieved on different modes of implementation and institutionalization of climate change adaptation policies in the cities of the Latin American region.

The third workshop of the Regional Learning Network is scheduled for June 12 and 13, 2012 and will again be hosted by the CEPAL. Decision makers and scientific experts involved in the prior Network meetings, as well as local stakeholders from Santiago will discuss key findings from the previous workshops and exchange their experiences. Bringing together experts from both the scientific and governmental field, the third workshop also intends to form the base for a future exchange on questions of climate change adaptation in the Latin American city.
